Best Of 2003

Introduction:
Shipwreck Island Studios.com Best Of 2003 Awards:

It took two long months to finish but the Best of 2003 is finally here! We thank everyone for being patient as we narrowed the list down to what we felt was the elite of the past year. We would also like to thank all the artists on the list for their music and for doing what they do best.

This was an extremely hard process as there were a lot of great releases in 2003 and it is difficult to cover every album or DVD released this year but the ones listed here are without a doubt the best that 2003 had to offer. (At least in our opinions)

The end result is sure to please and all the CDs/DVDs on this list come highly recommended by Shipwreck Island Studios.

So until The Best of 2004, enjoy! - Tony and Jere

Album Of The Year:

Firehouse - Prime Time

Firehouse returned with an intense studio album that has been deemed the band's best release since their 1990 debut. From Bill Leverty's heavy guitars to CJ Snare's incredible vocals Prime Time rocks strong and it just goes to show that you don't need  major label backing or famous producers to put out a amazing album. The band took a couple years with this disc but its extremely well produced and recorded and in the long run not many bands out there today create that vibe from the first track to the last.

Runners  Up:

Tie Between - Harem Scarem - Higher / Ramos - Living In The Light

-Canadian rockers Harem Scarem are considered by many as the most elite band in the world today. Only about a year after the release of their monster 'comeback' album: Weight of the World, Harem Scarem continue to raise the bar and Higher follows in the footsteps of earlier releases. (self-titled and Mood Swings) One fact remains clear the band haven't lost a step as this album is full of harmonies, guitars, and some of the best song writing out there, period.

-Josh Ramos released his first solo album which has been long over due. The result is an album that has an amazing rock vibe. Not only showcasing his amazing guitar talents but his vocal abilities as well.

Live Album Of The Year:

Sammy Hagar & The Wabo's - Hallelujah Live

Sammy put out his first live album in over 20 years and with this release the Red Rocker proves that he sounds best live. It's very hard for a musician to do a live album but Sammy went the extra mile going through over 300 live recordings to find the absolute best vibe and emotion on every track. If your looking for one live album for your collection then this would be the one to get.

Runner Up:

Hardline - Live at the Gods 2002

After nearly ten years out of the spotlight Hardline returned strong in 2002 with a new studio album (simply called II) and a memorable set at The Gods Music Festival in Bradford, U.K. This performance gave birth to this live CD which consists mostly of Hardline's vintage material but also includes a few new songs. The band really clicks live and this album is one that is full of emotion, great music, and Hardline sounding better then ever!

Honorable Mentions:

Meniketti - Live In Japan   /  3 Doors Down - Another 700 Miles

Solo Album Of The Year:

Ramos - Living In The Light

For over 10 years Josh Ramos has remained a prominent guitarist who has played with some of the best melodic rock bands out there, from The Storm to Two Fires to his recent gig with Hardline. To add to his impressive resume Josh went in the studio and recorded his debut solo album thus resulting with a disc that touches base on all his musical influences (Journey, The Storm, Two Fires, and Hardline all mixed into one) Add the haunting vocals of Mark Weitz (Malice, Eyes, Odin) and you get a release that sounds like a long lost Journey album.

Runner Up:

Harry Hess: Just Another Day

Harem Scarem front man, Harry Hess, made his solo debut with Just Another Day an album that mixes elements of melodic rock and pop. Gone are the heavy guitars of Harem Scarem instead Harry relies more on his brilliant voice and his remarkable song writing. This disc is perfect for unwinding after a busy day.

Honorable Mentions:

Jonathan Cain - Barebones

Movie Soundtrack Of The Year:

Pirates Of The Caribbean - Curse Of The Black Pearl

The perfect soundtrack from the perfect action/adventure film of 2003. Klaus Badelt has done a more then an exceptional job with this score. This is what draws the audience into the movie, its one thing to see a movie and go "Wow that was great!" but it's another to come out of the theater humming the main theme from it.

Lord of the Rings - Return of the King  /  The Matrix Revolutions

Comedy Album Of The Year:

Triumph the Insult Comic Dog - Come Poop With Me

Possibly the most popular insult comic out there Triumph's success came with appearances on Late Night With Conan O Brien, the foul mouth pooch has gone off on everyone from Bon Jovi to Star Wars fans. The main reason Firehouse has maintained their longevity is because of the astonishing vocals of CJ Snare. In the 13 years the band has been together CJ's voice has never sounded better and the proof lies within the group's latest release as he belts out song after song effortlessly.
