Jason Wood & 7th Decibel - 7th Decibel:
Where has that
true 80's rock sound gone? While bands like Journey, Reo Speedwagon,
Styx and others from that era are still touring today, none of them are
releasing material that holds true to what made them famous. If the
sound you grew up with is to live on then bands melodic rock bands of
today need to be heard. One such band hail's from Colorado and isn't all
about the flash, their motto is simply "It's All About The Fun!"
7th Decibel is a new melodic rock band from Colorado ready to push
forward and help keep that classic rock sound alive. With songs in hand
the band setout to record 8 tracks from Jason's previous band Vision
180. Out of the ashes the band has become a whole and has finally
released "ReWind." This release is the first step in a long process as
the band is currently working on their first full length disc as a
collective unit.
The Island recently caught up with guitarist Jason Wood to discuss his
past in Vision 180, his current band 7th Decibel and where he sees the
future of his music going. As an added bonus, Brad, Kelly, Koobs & Mike
were kind enough to chime in with their answers to some of our
questions. A True Island First!...![]()

Island:
We might as well start with your past and work our way to the
present day. Your previous band Vision 180 was so amazing and
had some extremely killer material. The album had a lot of
Journey (Raised On Radio) sounds through-out it. After a little
promotion you guys were really hopping yet after a while you
faded away. What happened & where did you guys go?
Jason:
Thanks
Tony! I will always love the Vision 180 stuff. Bobby Loux and I
worked very hard on it and we really thought someone would step
up and take us to the next level. But I believe since we were
not a true BAND and out playing live, I think that hurt us. I
moved to CO, I thought I was done playing, then I met Mike and
next thing I know I have an entire band. Bobby I believe is
working on a solo CD and I wish him all the Best!

Island:
This next question goes hand in hand with the first. I see
your new band 7th dB does not include Bobby Loux (Lead Singer -
Vision 180). I remember back to when Bobby Loux was having some
health issues. Did that have anything to do with why you've
added vocalist Brad Bowels to 7th dB?
Jason:
NO! I’ve always wanted Loux to be apart of this. I even
called him up and emailed him asking him to join me. But I
believe with the distance and mainly musical differences now,
I’m not sure it would have ever worked anyway. Brad is a great
singer and is a work horse in the studio and on stage. Even
though I was bummed about not having Bobby, I believe I can
really move forward and create a lot of music and play a ton of
shows with this new Band!

Island:
Moving on and starting over is something that is never easy
to do but that is exactly what you have done with your music.
What was the driving force behind putting together 7th dB?
Jason:
I just need to play music. It’s something that is just in
you. You can’t just stop it. When this band finally came
together I just could not believe it. The energy and the passion
and dedication each member brings, is mind blowing! We are on a
mission to bring back and take over melodic rock! I just wish
some of the bands that we all grew up with who have BIG tours
going on, won’t throw a band like ours in front of that crowd!
We can’t tour with Puff Daddy!!

Island:
Since we're on the subject of putting the band together. I'm
curious about the other guys in the band. Who are they and what
are their previous experiences?
Brad Bowles - Vocals: Past
band includes Brutal Hand from CO. Now I am in 7thDB I’m taking
it to the Top! My influences are everybody from Skid Row,
Poison, Journey, VH., and anyone else who just ROCKS.
Kelly Esquire - Bass: I have
been in many bands such as, The T.C. Pirates, Life’s Comedy and
Sue Paine Project. I can play some Drums and Guitar but Bass is
what I have grown to Love.
Koobs - Keyboards & Guitar:
New to Co., played in lots of bands in NY., and now Playing Keys
and rhythm guitar in 7thDB. I love all music – if it’s good it’s
good!
Mike Eaton - Drums: I’ve
been playing drums in the area for 20yrs. My influences are
Steve Smith, Ron Tutt, Nigel Ollsson, Peter Criss.

Island: Just listening to Brad's vocals I can't help
but compare and contrast him to Bobby Loux. While Brad sometimes
sounds similar to Bobby he also branches off and shows more of a
gritty rock sound. While listening to the album I kept hoping he
was going to really break away and show me more of that
grittiness. Is that more or less his nature and will we hear
more of that sound on future projects?

Jason: Just for the recording of ReWind, I asked Brad to stay true to the nature of the 180 recording. So that people could hear that we can not only cover the songs but do them justice. Live he goes after most of them how he feels…but always staying true to the song. In the future you will see some harder singing from him.

Island:
7th dB has a classic sound, one that bands like
Journey/Reo Speedwagon & Styx started with. Why did you decide
to go this route? The reason I ask is because those bands today
seem to just rest on their previous material and can't seem to
come up with new innovative songs that stay true to their name &
the sound that made them famous.
Jason:
First, it
is the style that we love. All of us in this band love every one
of those bands mentioned! This music is in us and we love to
play rock music! We believe we are creating that sound again but
not cheesy. I’m bummed as well with a lot of the new stuff from
our favorite bands! I would love to hear them go back to there
roots! There is no reason to go for a more current sound… radio
wouldn’t play it anyway!

Island:
Out of all the material on "ReWind" the one that really
stands out has to be "Will You Remember Me." Having heard the
original version I have to say that this new mix puts the
original to shame. Was it difficult to go back in and pull songs
from Vision 180 and rework them to really give them new life?
Also how did you decide what songs to rework when Vision 180 had
13 amazing songs to choose from?
Jason:
Thanks Tony!! I’ve always wanted to hear these songs done
with real drums! So no it wasn’t hard to rework them. Now they
are done with a BAND and it came out Great! I love the feel of
the tunes…They just have a energy about them now. We just pulled
what songs we felt were the best and the strongest!

Island:
Focusing on your guitar work for a moment I
have to say that while you have a sound all your own there are
some hints of some classic guitarists. I hear references to Neal
Schon and even Eddie Van Halen at times. How do you go about
writing your guitar parts, is it planned ahead of the recording
process or a spur of the moment thing?
Jason:
Hahaha
Planned Ahead!! Sometimes it’s a spur of the moment thing. It
just depends on the tune. I love Neal Schon! He is my favorite
guitar player to listen too of all time! He is just the master
of singing with his guitar! Eddie Van Halen is just INSANE, The
greatest ROCK guitar player ever! But I listen to a lot of
players! My approach to a lead depends on the song and I just
try to give it what it needs!

Island:
Now of course to those who
knew Vision 180 there are going to be some comparisons between
that band and your current. What would you say to those who look
at "ReWind" as a covers disc?
Jason:
The recording is pure in form and from 5 different
players! We stayed true to the original recording as much as
possible. The songs are recorded better and with real
everything! So I say if you liked the Vision 180 CD? I think you
will like the fresh recording of these songs. It was also a way
to introduce Brad and the band and show that not only can we
record the songs but we can play them live.

Island: The song that really symbolized Vision 180 in my mind had to be "Don't Be Lonely." Now the song has been completely reworked and sounds so much better then the original yet it isn't my personal favorite on "ReWind." "Will You Remember Me" no doubt has me hooked on the new disc because of all the new elements in the song. What would you guy say is your personal favorite reworked song and why?
Jason W: Will you remember
me is by far my favorite as well. It just came out so perfect!
Brad B: My Favorite song at
first was “All I Ever Needed” Now after the recording I really
think “If this is love” is it!!
Mike E: If this is love. I
like the way we pushed it and put more power into the tune.
Koobs: I really like “What
We’re Feeling”, It’s a cross between Van Halen, and Foreigner.
The Vocals I think came out great and works well with this
Rocker Tune.
Kelly E: I like “I’m the
One”. I like how we pushed the power up and really made it ROCK.

Island: It only seems fair
to go in and talk about a couple of the songs from "ReWind." In
a sentence or two explain what you feel about each of the
following: Will You Remember Me, Don't Be Lonely, If This Is
Love, More To Believe In.
Jason:
Will You Remember Me: I was going through a very bad time in
life and this song just captured how I was feeling. I don’t feel
the same way about the song today. My hope is that it will help
or touch somebody and help them like it did me at the time. I
believe it is one of the most pure and honest songs I’ve ever
written and one of my best!
Don't Be Lonely: Just a story line lyrically that is just really
good! I always liked the music and energy to this song, but the
lyrics are really cool!
If This Is Love: I wrote this the same time I did Will You
Remember Me. Again, I really like how this song flows with
awesome melodies and cool lyrics!
More To Believe In: Bobby and I were always watching politics on
TV and just saying to ourselves in ALL of the U.S. this is the
best we can come up with??? Then we would watch TBN and all of
those preachers begging for money…not just a little but saying
$1000 or your whole check and if you didn’t you had no faith.
Shameful! So that is how that song came together! We all need
MTBI!!

Island: Where can fans pick up your new release "ReWind?" Will there be any other merchandise available for purchase?
Jason: We are putting out a very limited edition release of ReWind! It will only be sold at our Website. We will also have shirts, stickers, 8x10’s and Posters. But we really want a Record Deal!! We have our next CD already written. It will be called “Frequency”! We also have 2 other tunes to put on the ReWind CD, That can be re-packaged and re- Released. So if there are any serious Labels out there reading this… contact us and we will be happy to show you the new material!

Island: 7th dB has played a handful of live gigs this year already. Will there be more before the year ends so that fans can enjoy your music in a live environment? Also which do you prefer, playing live or playing in the studio & why?

Jason: Yes! We will be
playing the Buffalo Rose this Wed night @ 9:30! Plus we will be
playing DEC 15th with Rightfully Accused @ Andolini’s! We like
both! We really like working in the studio because you can get
very creative and we like listening to a song grow! But LIVE is
just an insane feeling! We really love to play live!
![]()
Island: I love your slogan on your MySpace page which reads "No Shock Just Rock!" It seems like you are extremely grounded and know exactly what you want when it comes to music. Where do you see your music taking you in the future?
Jason: We would love nothing
more then to just play LIVE everywhere and record music. We are
all about the song and the music. NEVER ANY SHOCK! We don’t need
to cuss or dress with skulls or pimp our look out with bling.
You can find that anywhere! We are about solid songs and hook
filled meaningful straight up Rock & Roll PERIOD! We just hope
we can just play and show people a good time!

Island: Future... We talked before about a live DVD being released at some point as well as another album. Is there a timetable setup for more 7thdB releases?
Jason: YES! We want to shoot a Pro LIVE DVD of one of our shows! We will be doing that very soon! Frequency will be out by the end of May ’07! SO WE CAN ROCK THE SUMMER!!
![]()
Island: Well guys that about does it for our questions. Thanks so much for taking time out to talk with us. We look forward to hearing more and more from 7th Decibel. Any final thoughts, words of wisdom, or anything you'd like to mention to our readers, your fans?
